Removing/crippling the makefile really feels like a solution in search of a problem. Why would we intentionally cause that kind of pain for our users?

I put together a commit to fix this [over on my fork](https://github.com/michael-grunder/hiredis/tree/reserved-identifiers) and we'll use #807 to bikeshed whether we want to include it for v1.0.0
