Alternative: Have our own functions in `string_utils.h` now, these return an optional. I'd probably replace them with a template, i.e. `str_to(...)` instead of `str_to_int(...)`.

Personally I have no desire to cater to every Linux distro's specialties unless the fix is easy. I would much rather say that we limit official support to the latest...
