Relevant update added to #166 since CLA wasn't filled out, and to avoid merge conflicts.

I re-made the commit to fix the merge conflicts due to restructuring.

@meredithslota We had discussed this last year, is there anything that could be done to change the specific commit message, but not require a full rebasing?

Not sure what this PR accomplishes. Most of the code is just commented out. Please reopen with a description of what updates are being made.
