@gzotti I understand. I'm just brainstorming here. @alex-w About JD; I don't think JD should be used post-1600. I think it would confuse most people.
On one hand, stars are point sources and should always appear point-like. On the other hand, however, wide-angle lenses will show stars as elongated if they are near the edge...
If it's not hard to implement, then there could be an option such as "Elongate stars with projection" or something, which lets the user decides for themselves what is ugly...
@alex-w Wouldn't the shadow markings fit anyway?
I don't see the point in showing the shadow, if it does not reflect the border between visible and invisible.
