Whether progress / page number is needed at all is obviously debatabe. It was just a quick and dirty suggestion, I'm not really convinced of my idea either.

Adding a special case *only* for German is not a good solution, as it is not generic at all and will likely fail for various other languages. A real solution...

I still think resizing is the simplest and most straight-forward solution. Automatic resizing could be done by first rendering the text in a single line with a fixed font size....

Weird. That never occurred to me, and I did not find it annoying. Maybe it is just me (or not).

Well, as I said, just display “1st place”, “2nd place”, “3rd place” etc. That's more straightforward and doesn't require you to introduce names at all.
