Limitation caused by Minecraft. Modloaders gather mods only on startup. Which means even if you would change mod file, nothing will happen until you restart game

At least v0.8.4 everything works fine. Did you use any programms like revo uninstaller that could remove modrinth protocol regestration from regestry?
I'm also having similar path related issues, but with things like changing instance icon or adding non-modrinth mod through modrinth app. #2444
