I changed the title because I think issues should focus on the problem not on a suggested solution.

ISTM that writing to disk vs never writing to disk is one choice, and checkpoints vs no checkpoints is another choice. These are orthogonal: you can make the choices separately....

Discussed in the bug scrub; apologies we dropped the ball in July. This still looks worthwhile, however at the last CI run Windows tests failed and something needs a DCO...

Two patch releases. It will be in the next minor release.

Rebased against latest `main`; reworded the test to use `labels.FromStrings()`.
