I think we need to encode special characters in the BibTeX string to escape them as LaTeX entities. https://github.com/inukshuk/bibtex-ruby may be able to handle this.

I agree we want an explicit comment from the reviewer. Perhaps we should add something about this to the editor docs?

Yes, I knew about this one. We basically don't update the JOSS dashboard if reviewers are changed mid-review. I've marked this as both a bug, and an enhancement :-)
