Does it still crash if you remove the `preferences` file and start with no imported settings? Would be good to see any error messages or logs associated with this.
In Kubuntu 25.04 and Wayland, official Wesnoth 1.18.4 release from Steam, I'm not able to replicate this. Need someone else to have a go as my systems with Wesnoth 1.19...

@Pentarctagon and @Vultraz were working on adapting Wesnoth to SDL3 in #8638, but I'm not sure how close that is to completion.
#8638 is pulling from Pentarctagon's fork.
There may be a link with #10150, then.
