Agreed - i did not know that either.

Probably worth fixing this. Inside the container there can be deletions of compiled twig, css/js, etc. You dont want that bloating and confusing the IDE on the host.

Thanks for the detailed post @insyht. I'm specifically interested in using PHPStorm + VS Code Server. Is that what you are using? I'm using terminology per this diagram 

What worked for me was `anf\[NAME]@mass.gov`. `anf` is the domain assigned to me by my work.
