I've made a [Kobo version](https://cloud.drone.io/geek1011/dictutil/94/6/6) of GOTDict as part of my work on [dictutil](https://github.com/geek1011/dictutil) (dictutil is still a work-in-progress, but it's now feature-complete; documentation is coming soon).
I currently build it as part of dictutil, and want to keep it that way for now (dictutil is still in progress, and I haven't made a decision about images...
Images have been fixed in firmware 4.20.14601. I'll make another release which adds them again (I'll build it with and without images).
I have released dictutil v0.1.0 stable. It's pretty much finished now.

I'm not totally familiar with how the metadata code works or when the file is manipulated, but you could try using a streaming JSON parser and keeping an index in...
This is pretty simple to do no matter which approach you take, although adding Go to an existing image will probably be the shortest. > or the new Github container...
