Would you create a PR for this? The existing trial and error method shouldn't be removed. Accepting an extra parameter is fine. You could also fastpath for the required format...

you can determine the format beforehand. i don't know how. that's why i ended up with this

Looks like this is totally possible but my knowledge in graphics programming is very limited and i would take a lot of time to read about all the required stuff....
