It's just one thread. It has a lot of recursion; maybe that's the problem. Might have chains of methods a thousand long or so. Reducing the rate helped indeed.
Here's a very rough mock-up (in macOS Preview) of what i'm thinking. Maybe with more markers. 
As extra benefit, it'd remind me which way time goes. I can't remember if time goes up or down in these graphs. I might have got the above the wrong...

The graph contents disappears when I scroll up or scroll down. It's not just scrolling down.
Given the feature isn't working, I have removed the zoom functionality in https://github.com/mhansen/scatter.fm/commit/2d6f0415e05368cb0500d1e496cd0cffeb6c4cd8.
Thanks for the contribution! This looks pretty useful. I have mostly boring maintenanability-questions but this is a really good start! It's fast enough to run on my new M1 mac,...
I think we should also add some tests. And some documentation for end-users, maybe just in the README?
