Regex mode supports that already. Isn't that sufficient? Given regular mode treats all characters as literal, supporting \ as an escape would require another mode, or at least another mode...

If we can’t reproduce the/a problem, we can’t do anything about it. Perhaps you have a bunch of additional tools/plugins installed that contribute to the memory consumption?
