I don't think the user is prompted for permissions when adding the extension unpacked though. But we can test this in the beta branch.

Can you confirm that you have neverEndingReddit disabled? I cannot see how the function which hides the navigation buttons would be invoked if that is the case.
I realize now that this only changes the declared permission "Read **and change** your browsing history" to "Read your browsing history", which may not be worthwhile for the added trouble...
