Another approach could be to ask latlng2 folk to allow an option where a > +/-90/180 is allowed. Just thinking out loud.

Have introduced the idea of hairline paths for roads below a certain zoom level, seems to work ok and improves efficiency a bit (I think)
Also improvements in textLayouts hopefully added.
