In Platformio you need to select the build& Upload in the esp8266 branch/folder
You need to flash the Filesystem. Some lines below "build" in Platformio

You need to run in platform.io:  And then, post the log when it is running, i.e. when choosing "monitor" in platform.io. That gives you debugging information.
Yes, would be nice to get this running also on 8266.
