I won't be working on this for a while. When I start working on this problem I will assign the bug to myself.
We need to wait until gRPC compiles clean with `layering_check` enabled before turning this on in our package.
It is more general than `compute`. We generate mocks for all classes and never test that this code compiles (or show how to use it).

Closing for now. Sorry we could not give you the answer you wanted, but I think we know what works and what does not.
We should do this, but needs some design.
Any thoughts? Can we add any additional logging to troubleshoot this issue?
