On macos you should compile from source at this time (see Wiki) and specify a file path to the executable (eg ./diamond)
You can also install diamond using bioconda or homebrew.

More precisely, you *can* use the `--shape-mask` option to set the seed shapes manually, e.g. `--shape-mask 111111`.

I will try to reproduce the problem. Unfortunately it's not easy to track down this sort of problem that only occurs randomly.
The latest release should fix hanging or crashes in the computing alignments stage. Please reopen in case the issue persists.
