How about every 65536 instructions? That constant is already used as the size of a memory page and it's a very nice, even number.
Have you instead considered systemd instead of relying on a pidfile?
[systemd-user](https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd/User) is a thing.
[this commit](https://github.com/Shuo-IRC/Shuo/commit/f486e9ccc44e7929c1fe94ef687ad75e1d063a78) will enforce that.
