I can't replicate this at cbe333583eb. Do you have any add-ons installed? Does it still crash if you remove them?
Can you try removing your `preferences` file (move or make a back-up)? If you don't know where it is, you can find the location from the starting screen -> About...
You mentioned Steam: if only to eliminate it as a variable, can you find the path to `wesnoth` and run it manually (without Steam running). I reconfirmed using 1.19.9 release...
Has Wesnoth ever worked for you previously? Does this still occur with Wesnoth 1.18, whether from Steam or [Debian's packages](https://packages.debian.org/bookworm-backports/wesnoth)? Are you willing and able to try building wesnoth/master yourself?
