At first blush, I think the Chart of Accounts should be used in this case. A heading account with sub accounts - which would be categories - in Quickbooks parlance....

I haven't seen this on Intel graphics. Perhaps it's related to nvidia. @leviport is this easily reproducible. Does it occur with nouveau?
This functionality can be accomplished by floating and then minimizing/unminimizing a window.
