My MMU only grinds when something is wrong in the extruder. Filament doesn't get released on unload (often due to a string), or hits one of the multiple transitions above...

Mine reset randomly as well - I didn't note what was happening as carefully, I just ran alternate firmware again.

Did you make any progress on this? I had issues with cabling, all sorts of odd behaviors, typically one motor or another wouldn't move or would lose its place partway...
