The required Cilium changes (in cilium/cilium#34212) have been merged into `main` and will be in Cilium 1.17. We probably also need some updates to the Gateway API CRD managment guide...

As I mentioned in the meeting yesterday, I think there are a couple of other relevant concerns here: - the mooted `infrastructure` stanza could be used to control Gateway merging...
That seems reasonable to me, something like "Create in-tree ReferenceGrant resource for allowing cross-namespace references"? ("in-tree" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.)
Cilium committer here, just wanted to explain a bit more - some time ago, we defined ImplementationSpecific to mean "regex matching", and when you submit what looks like a prefix...
I'm not sure about the second option, but the first one would let us in Contour remove a Lua workaround we have that does the same thing. You can see...
We're still in the planning phase for now, we're working on getting some resources prioritized here to make some more progress though.
