This is an intentional bug (for better and worse), as I didn't have a decent-performing alternative idea. Note also #2819 which is a related select-performance-hack problem.

I think multiple files is the correct way, as it will perform best, allow rollover, and allows potential multi-system simulations.

Looking quickly I take that back, the rollover naming is part of verilated_vcd_c, so I'll avoid making a change at this time.
Probably will be fixed with #4920, but leaving as non-duplicate until sure.
A simple test of changing only ident compares correctly for me, if you find a test case that breaks please note it and/or pull to fix.
