Might be worth mentioning this is getting worked on, see the Sway [issue](https://github.com/swaywm/sway/issues/1486), the wlroots [PR](https://github.com/swaywm/wlroots/pull/2353), and a official wayland protocol that seems to be fairly actively [developed](https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland/wayland-protocols/-/merge_requests/14).
