The file partitioning that is supported for GML files right now should also work with generic XML files. Probably only the possibility for the UI configuration is missing.
Pegdown often causes problem (e.g. parser timeouts) and is deprecated. It is proposed to replace it with the compatibel flexmark-java: https://github.com/vsch/flexmark-java#pegdown-migration-helper
