I would only consider switching build systems if it makes protobuf updates easier / more automated. If you have time feel free to submit a PR.

Tests have been fixed, we will be deprecating v2 when we fix the release issue.

I'm working on making the process of protobuf update automatic. I'll have a PR ready probably later today so we're done with those type of issues once and for all...
