Which OS are you using, what kind of hardware do you have? It seems you custom compiled monero, or used a package manager?
It might be related to HDD, is it a local disk, USB attached, network drive?
That might explain worse performance but should not cause any minute long timeouts.

Which operating system? Which monerod version? Did you self compile it, install from package manager or use release binaries? Can you consistently reproduce the crash? What was monerod currently doing?...
