You might consider reStructuredText as a sort of middle ground. It's more familiar and "Markdownish" than LaTeX, but would allow you to keep the inter-content hyperlinking and formatting as well.
This would be a perfect candidate for a new [queue worker](https://inquest.readthedocs.io/projects/threatingestor/en/latest/extras.html?#queue-workers) - you could probably do it with just a few lines difference from the [paste processor](https://github.com/InQuest/ThreatIngestor/blob/master/threatingestor/extras/pasteprocessor.py).
