Update: I can confirm that building the modules as described at the [crouton wiki](https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton/wiki/Build-chrome-os-kernel-and-kernel-modules) and placing the cifs.ko and md4.ko into the /usr/local/modules/x86_64_3.8.11/ directory allowed them to be loaded properly....
