the main reason why there is only built-in controlnet is because it's designed with less overhead than the other controlnet requires, which makes it more efficient in forge.

It's just swapping it from VRAM to SYSRAM, which is negligible in speed difference, while integral to keeping from having bugs and also for general memory management to keep garbage...
