celestrak.org is throttled, so trying to connect to many times can mean a temporary ban (a few hours). We also use spacetrack at our institute, but it requires a login

Just my 2 cents: we use a dynamic area in the right projection to resample each segment and the use a wms to put them all together (with viirs granules)....
Quite dramatic differences indeed! Just to refresh my memory, does this mean that the SDR reader uses the central wavelength from pyspectral as you suggest doing for the compact reader?...

what does the sdr files say for central wavelength? It should be the same between sdr and compact I guess...
A common thing to do when working with remote files is to enable caching, to avoid redownloading things. See the fsspec documentation on how to do that.
with enough caching, calling the modifier three times is probably not an issue indeed
