I've verified this to work locally by overwriting the `_message_handler` with this version. It no longer throws any errors and because I had retries turned on it properly started processing...

I'm still getting this issue. It seems to happen before it gets to any of the logic in the function itself. It persists between retries. I'm on the latest version...
