Can't students use "my-gdrive" for this use case? It should do the right file-based caching for this.
Did they log out of Pyret? The most likely cause is a Pyret cookie that's referring to a different Google account.
Another thing to check is if Pyret is listed as a connected app (in the student's account) at https://security.google.com/settings/security/permissions?pli=1

This was a great idea at the time. It will be superseded by other save-to-localstorage/indexedDB solutions before we can make use of it, though.
(This was actually really great work that went a little beyond just local file saving. It was an electron-hosted container for CPO for offline use.)
