Not being able to access some ports is certainly a bug. Admittedly the last paragraph is more of a feature request though.
Variant information is already collected, it just needs to be displayed.
Immediately if syncing from git, but rsync is behind by I think about half an hour (or more if using a less frequently updated mirror).
`port sync` runs `portindex` for git sources in addition to pulling. So avoiding it is possible, but only if you are running `portindex` as a separate step.
Might be worth keeping at least a ui_debug message to indicate that this is happening?

`gnome-desktop` failed to activate because command execution failed. Normally there are no shell commands run during activation, so it would be the one it runs in its post-activate block.
