Indeed, that appears to not be possible at the moment, I think that needs a change [upstream](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/) as you can't use columns either.

Good thoughts, agree there's room for exceptions. And if we can find a rule of thumb for when to make exceptions (like for unique template behaviors like you mentioned, perhaps?)...
