The simplicity is appealing, but can also lead to a bit too much magic :-) So this feature should be configurable on/off, and perhaps also pluggable regex pattern for filename...
Have you found an up-to-date fork of this that is published on maven?
Sorry for going silent on this, I'll put it on my radar for next week.
I'd say jetty.xml is an implementation detail and officially we don't need to give back-compat guarantees for it, and we should be allowed to assume that users do not hand-edit...

Please create a JIRA and fill in the PR template. Also, you have to explain the feature you are proposing much more in detail. Give examples of what is difficult...
