I think this it the responsibility of the query, not the grid configuration.
On the special reports page (Reports > Special Reports) you should see an 'Add Report' button. Maybe an extension conflicts with this one? Check with the [n98-magerun](http://magerun.net) tool to see...

Could you try it when commenting out the [_beforeSave](https://github.com/kalenjordan/custom-reports/blob/e19b0330acc6e2be88b777f52fd8b997a7b094d4/app/code/community/Clean/SqlReports/Model/Report.php#L71) function?
What exactly have you tried? Could you paste your grid config here?
