When using versionrewrite-pattern dashes should no longer be stripped.

yes, it's a permission problem. It can be fixed with an udev file: cat /etc/udev/rules.d/espressif.rules #303a:1001 SUBSYSTEM=="tty", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1001", ATTRS{idVendor}=="303a", OWNER="hramrach"
Note: some other WebUSB flashing tools specifically report this problem which makes it easy to diagnose. On the other hand, ESP Launchpad provides a generic 'something failed' message.
AFAIK github does not solve this. The archive you get from github may include LFS but not submodules. Release archives published on github are created and uploaded by the developer...
