I have encountered similar issue, and I think it's not gruvbox's fault. I 'm using `alacritty` which support true color and opacity. so I have `set termguicolors` in my vimrc....

A relevant issue is [here](https://github.com/vim/vim/issues/981). It did work, however, I found the number column wired. 

Seems this plugin is no longger maintained and the creator haven't been active on github for months. Perhaps we should start a maintained fork?
