Update to this: dying with a method other than the sacrificial knife (I used a cactus in this instance) works correctly. The sacrificial knife appears to be the cause.

This is thaumium fortress armour. The same problem occurs with goggles of revealing, the bewitched robe and bewitched leggings, and the bloodstained thaumaturge's boots. I've not tried other armours yet....
