I've seen [Chosen](https://github.com/harvesthq/chosen) being used quite often - it doesn't deviate too much from a standard select and it does incremental search/autocomplete. Might be an option?

I'd say yes - it looks a lot like e.g. the DatePicker used in Umbraco, so should feel "at home" :-)
