This may be controversial, but did you consider adding some kind of "feature sponsorships"? Meaning if you have some idea approved, people may vote with their donations for the tasks....
Unfortunately i dont know such tool, one project i know used it years ago, but it seems they no longer do, and all the other projects ive seen this implemented...
any news on that? BigInt is supported since Node 10.5, i think it's time to use it
