This should be closed with an new release of blacklight and an update. The PR in blacklight has been merged and backported.

@alundgard @jcoyne clicking on those icons actually reloads the page and goes it the equivalent of a new url. Does that change the recommendation or is it the same?

@taylor-steve No. It is a breaking change because we are removing the gem and the gem has a function called in the base.html.erb file.
