Sounds cool, but I fear the VGA signal is rather noisy even if the input is turned off.
Should be possible by implementing a new "sink" https://github.com/gkaindl/ambi-tv/blob/master/src/components/lpd8806-spidev-sink.c The avg-color-processor should already to what you want to get the average color.
I was worried too but apparently the wording changed at some point. Does it mean that code that uses it is fine but it is not recommended for new code?...
