i also had this issue several times with jpg. i found out that reducing resolution form 300 to 72 dpi before uploading solved that issue for me + saving them...
we also have this isuue with that lexicon error and the performance is also very low when laoding around 150 thumbs on a page. modx revo itself is quite fast...
