The default tessellation is now set to 1 degree: https://github.com/GPlates/gplately/blob/bd3e4b89ed60b32da8c150be3cc3b8d6b9ebf59c/gplately/plot.py#L707 These are _not_ great circle distances, as far as I can see. The relevant code is in `gplately.geometry`.

Yep, option 2 sounds best to me.

 Here is another map with more comparisons at different lat,lon coordinates.
 And another using a Mercator projection.
OK - I think it now makes sense why the great circle distances were different. The map below has an additional set of circles (in purple) which calculates the distance...
This has now been reimplemented in #249. Close this PR.
Is this something you can look into @michaelchin?
