I've pushed a branch that updates MPV support to use an event-driven model and avoids polling every time the lighter is updated. It's not finished yet, but it's mostly functional....
Let's take it one thing at a time. First you'll want to get playback working, and probably a library backend for selecting tracks. Details like that can come later.
