@dcook-hsi have you considered making a contribution request to the router for this rather than setting up the additional infrastructure?

Also plenty of folks use [`direnv`](https://direnv.net/) or _many other_ tools (including Docker itself) that handles this in their local environment and additionally automatically uses different `.env` files for different environments....
